Architecture
Many of the buildings featured in this architectural itinerary of contemporary Milan are the work of a younger generation.  A comforting sign in respect to 10 years ago for a city that has not yet caught up with other European centers.  The first three listed serve to root the architectural landscape in a historical context comprising of many different architectural periods of quality.  A recent history, for which one only needs to go back to the 1950s, of buildings by Moretti, Ponti, BBPR, Asnago/Vender, who are well-known contemporary Italian protagonists in the international arena of architectural design.

Design
Milan is not an ideal town, it is rather the town of ideas. Inventions and shapes are thought of and conceived everywhere, often in unsuspected, undiscovered places. Milan is the town of a widespread, often difficult to find design. Because here design can be easily found, along the streets, during the Furniture show that takes place in April, in parallel with the most important International Furniture Show. For the rest of the year, one needs to be curious and open-eyed, because Milan is often shy and tends to hide its secrets. Only downtown it is more proud and willing to disclose its treasures, that often are synonymous with fashion and design and always with high quality.

by Luisa Castiglioni (shops comments by Cecilia Fabiani)
City Center
The heart of Milan is small-sized, easy to get around and also pleasant if one takes one’s time. The ideal path in search of the Italian design starts at De Padova, a touchstone since the fifties. Internationally appreciated design is also in abundance in via Durini, where famous brand stores can be found one after another, such as, for example, Cassina and B&B Italia. Round the corner there is corso Monforte, where Flos, Luceplan, Cappellini and Guzzini come one after the other, where two quite different brands boast their treasures in two showrooms next to each other. Not far from there, Azucena tells a rather different tale, a tale of great craftsmanship expertise. Another emblematic street, and also one of the nicest of Milan, is via Manzoni. Armani, Driade, Pellini are just a few of the shops  continuing to offer wellness and pleasure, distinguished by everyday, discreet luxury.

It is easy to reach this center of Milanese beauty, a discreet and deep beauty. Located here is the palace that hosts some of the most important cultural institutions in town: the picture gallery, the Biblioteca Braidense Library, the astronomical observatory, the botanical gardens, the Lombard Institute of Science and Literature, the Art Academy. This is the District of Arts par excellence, full of art galleries, shops, and delights where breathing a bohemian atmosphere is still possible. Spazio Pontaccio, Post design, Moroso, Edra are only a few of the places giving visitors a chance to approach design, that is capable of expressing itself in many different ways. Confirmed by the presence of concept stores like 10 Corso Como or High tech.

Solari - Porta Genova - Navigli
Moving closer to the area more important than any other for the creativity produced in Italy, other highly distinguished objects can be found, such as jewels by Pilgiò and a series of products created by Luisa Cevese | Page 115 | with an unusual material that combines textile scraps with plastics, the so-called ll (eleven).

Bottega Gadda, the Navigli antique market (every last Sunday of the month), Salvatore+Marie, Cyrus Company, Trace, Emporio 31 and a bit further on Rossana Orlandi | Page 116 | Space and the atelier of Colomba Leddi, are very pleasant and inspiring encounters. Here, big brands leave room for a more widespread and informal creativity.

Isola
There are places in Milan that particularly spark off nostalgia, because memory is more alive and palpable there than elsewhere. Among these, Isola, a quarter characterized by well defined boundaries, marked out by the train tracks that encompass it with a precise shape and identity that differentiate it from the rest of the town. This is a multi-dimensional district, traditional and innovative at the same time, where places out of step with their times live together with such realities as Wunderkammerstudio (www.wunderkammerstudio.it) in Via P. Maroncelli 12. Very easy to find places that attract people through their orientation towards pure experimentation and creativity, such as G-Lab, Après-Midi, La Fabbrica del vapore.

From downtown Milan the city extends towards new design centres. The Design faculty of the Poly is located here, where the future of everyday inventions is born. Here, one can find highly innovative studios and laboratories, Studiolabo (www.studiolabo.it) and The Bag (www.thebagartfactory.it).
An alternative exhibition location of the Triennale | Page 113 | was established here, as a substitute to the more institutional one located downtown. There are a wealth of objects to discover, Blitz (a 2,600-meter emporium, designed in the shape of a large market for new and used objects and furniture, where the underlying philosophy is about re-use of furniture).

Discovering Milan is worthwhile, at a slow pace. Every corner hides pleasant surprises. Ideas and projects are put together and thought of almost in secret, far from display windows. And often even shops must be looked for with patience, far off the beaten track. A sort of city exploration enables one to discover a different world, both composite and interesting. Making a choice is quite a difficult task. Dovetusai, MC Selvini, Jannelli&Volpi confirm that creativity may take many forms, everywhere, in a town that is never predictable and needs to be discovered and enjoyed with curiosity.

Museums
La Triennale
Established in 1923 as the “Biennial Exhibition Centre of Decorative Arts” of Monza; after 10 years it moved to Palazzo dell’Arte, a building designed by Giovanni Muzio and erected between 1931 and 1933, which became the Triennale. Over the years, the exhibitions taking place here have offered an international view of architecture, interior and product design and other similar disciplines. Its name does not however mean there are three-year cycles, because its programmes are run on a continuous basis.

The various areas of the centre have been restructured partly by Gae Aulenti, known for similar works at the Gare d’Orsay in Paris, and also by Studio Michele De Lucchi who is now planning the city’s Design Museum which is scheduled to open later in 2007 on the first floor of the Palazzo. There are also areas housing an archive, a bookshop, a library with reading room and a cafeteria-restaurant overlooking the park. The centre also operates in the suburban area of Milan’s new Polytechnic, the Triennale at Bovisa, established at the end of 2006, a temporary three-year structure designed by Pier Luigi Cerri for modern art events. It has also set up its first base abroad, at the Shiodomeitalia Creative Center, which is in the new Italian quarter of Tokyo.

Studio Museum Achille Castiglioni
Visiting the studio of a master of creative design is a rare experience, unique indeed. All the more so if the studio is that of Achille Castiglioni, the undisputed master, the most beloved for his ability but also for his light touch and irony. At a smart location in a palazzo of piazza Castello, not far from the Triennale, Achille Castiglioni, Cici for his friends, worked for some 50 years, creating products which made Italian design famous throughout the world. Since his death five years ago, the Triennale came to an agreement with the family to leave the studio exactly as it was, so that visitors can admire his models, prototypes, designs and a vast array of tools for daily use, some of them quite unusual, which Castiglioni collected as a bank of ideas for his designs and amusing university lectures. It reflects his boundless curiosity and serves to facilitate understanding of his individual creative processes.

The Quadrilateral Area
Prepare your snacks and begin your journey from any point inside the “Great Circuit“ between via Manzoni, via Montenapoleone, via Sant’Andrea, via della Spiga. Here you will find all the brands that symbolise fashion in Italy, as well as the foreign ones of course. Hold your breath: Dolce & Gabbana, the mega store Spazio Armani, Prada in five different locations (via Montenapoleone 8 women’s products, via Spiga 1 accessories for women, via Sant’Andrea 21 sportswear, via Montenapoleone 6 men’s shop and via Spiga 5 lingerie), plus Gucci, Emilio Pucci, Versace, Roberto Cavalli, Marni, Ruffo, Vierre, Bottega Veneta, Sergio Rossi, Missoni, Moschino, Bally, Borbonese... Unlike these mono-brand shops, a stronger element of fantasy and stylish novelty can be found at the Banner shop. Here you can be sure of finding a good selection of avant-garde brands. Even without strong motivation to purchase, it is worth a visit just to look at the design of this shop. And if you're willing to carry on walking, you are near enough to venture into corso Venezia and then into corso Vittorio Emanuele, with its fashion shops of a more national and popular style.

Via Torino - Porta Ticinese - Navigli
When in central Milan and wanting to get away from the Quadrilateral, there is a quieter route worth following in the narrow streets of the medieval city full of quality designer shops: in via San Maurilio (to the right of via Torino opposite FNAC) at No. 3 there is Luisa Cevese, well known for her handbags and accessories made of silicone sheeting plus a patchwork of different fabrics i.e. cuttings, scraps, remnants of materials. At No. 20 in the same street, you will find Carla Saibene with her models from the 1940s, really poetic styles without overdoing it. Any visitor interested in finding nice and delicate children’s clothes can continue towards Amelia in via Ansperto 10, where the German designer Katrin Arens offers a good collection of clothes and other things for kids which are natural, simple and practical. Henry Beguelin, in via Caminadella 7, sells his brand of accessories which are creative and very well made. Turning next into corso di Porta Ticinese, you will discover a wide variety of young people’s fashion shops including the street & denim cult styles. At the end of the street there is an address not to be missed for anyone really interested in good swimwear - Laura Urbinati, in piazza Sant’Eustorgio 6: exclusive bikinis and many more holiday clothing items. If you continue until you reach the Navigli, down Ripa di Porta Ticinese, you will find Antonioli at No. 1 of via Pasquale Paoli: a fashion concept store which is smart yet meticulous, offering many new design brands, both Italian & foreign.

Brera - Corso Como
In via Cusani, where it crosses via Ponte Vetero, facing the mural advertising for Armani, a symbolic name here, you can see Antonia, via Ponte Vetero 1. A shop offering a wide selection of innovative fashion brands. Continue into via Sacchi 3 for a visit to Spazio Jacassi. When stepping into Franco Jacassi Space, one has the impression of walking into a contemporary fashion history museum, located in a nice area patronized by people seeking inspiration and enlightement from the past.  Alternatively you can move further north in the direction of corso Como which can be reached by passing through the picturesque corso Garibaldi or from via Solferino; in either case, the route is worth it for anybody looking for the pure style of the Milanese. Such a historic site can be seen at Naj-Oleari in via Brera, naïf style prints and cool cotton fabrics reminiscent of the 1980s.

If you are looking for innovation in footwear (men and women) La Vetrina di Beryl, in via Statuto 4, is an address which is known to be internationally avant-garde, although it looks quite common. In via Statuto, at No. 12, there is TAD, a new concept store spread over four floors: 1,000 square metres dedicated to high fashion, interior design, wellness, and relaxation. And then crossing through piazza XXV Aprile at No. 10, you will find the 10 Corso Como concept store: a very design-oriented, cult place in Milan. Set up in a balustrade house (a typical Milanese town house), since 1990 the soul of Carla Sozzani offers exclusive  treats through her galaxy: a restaurant, a library-art gallery, a fashion and design boutique offering constantly updated trends and a very luxurious B&B.

Corso Genova - Tortona
This route starts in corso Genova, a classical Milanese shopping district, from which you can reach a zone known for its emerging creativity along via Tortona. Among the many shops in corso Genova, there is Biffi at No. 6: this is an outpost of the Biffi sisters, a clan in Milanese fashion, respected by both professionals and the general public. They are well-known for their new idea brands, and the response they get here is always good. From corso Genova you will move next to via Savona which, together with via Tortona, is central to the area (also visit www.zonatortona.it for details of the annual furniture & lighting design exhibition in April) where so many interesting new shops are opening: such as La Casa di Minea, in via Savona 17, selling fashion accessories, bags, custom jewellery created with poetic manual capability, to Trace in via Savona 19, selling clothes, accessories and such like, as well as the head offices of big fashion world names, like Armani Teatro designed by Tadao Ando in via Bergognone 59.

Nowhere else
Only found in Milan. Shops bordering on absurdity or obsession, like the zippers of Nardo Villa who sell zips only. He has some thousands of them, of any colour, length and type, which can be made to order. Or like Odoardo Sacchi who, since 1935, is the only shopkeeper left in Milan who sells just gloves. But there are also places where one can sink into the most genuine Milanese mood, like Lorenzo Borghi, an artisan who makes hats and headdresses for important events by hand, also to order. And there are also Spelta’s unsophisticated plimsolls, in thousands of colours, worn in the past by the most respectable girls and now in the spotlight of revival, hand-made and famous for their excellent comfort and price.

Contemporary art, fashion art and art events

Contemporary Art
While it is true that Milan is lacking a contemporary art museum, it is also true that the private spaces throughout the city are trying to overcome this weak point, in the attempt to guarantee Milan a place of honor amongst the Italian capitals of contemporary art. A few institutions already exist and are active, including the Provincia di Milano that promotes non-profit initiatives all over the territory and organizes inContemporanea (www.incontemporanea.it) a week dedicated to contemporary culture, as well as the “Settore Giovane” of the City of Milan which, through the Arengario Open Space and the Fabbrica del Vapore (www.fabricadelvapore.org) project, intends to give visibility and support to fresh and original initiatives.

Nevertheless, it is the private galleries and foundations which ensure that the international standards are met, due to the farsightedness, open-mindedness and consistency of the works exhibited.  Strong dynamism and remodeling of cultural geography can be experienced. The exhibition centre of via Ventura has been created, where about ten galleries, some of them historical and others newly established, have already settled and are still settling in the former Faema area. Soon, however not before 2008, via Procaccini and the surrounding area will turn out to be a valid alternative, perhaps a new Milanese challenge.

Metro Lambrate FS/Green Line (10 min. walk)

Manuela Klerkx is the only foreign gallery owner in Milan; after working at the “Galleria Pecci”, she recently opened her own gallery in the Ventura area, stating right away that she would devote special attention to rigorously contemporary works. It’s always exciting to discover who she decides to present at each show. Her programme looks very promising at the moment.

Pianissimo
Via Lambrate 24 - Tel 339.6598192
Tue-Sat 15:00-19:00
Metro Lambrate FS/Green Line

Slowly but inexorably, the new gallery has become known for its careful and well coordinated choices. The panorama of artistic works presented by Pianissimo is made up of a large group of Italian artists of the latest generation, highly talented and probably due to become famous in the near future. A marked interest in painting and in installation works shown has characterized right from the outset its artistic choices.

Giò Marconi
Via Tadino 15 - Tel 02.29404373
Tue-Sat 10:30-12:30 / 15:30-19:00
Metro porta venezia/Red Line

In spite of any etiquette or nomenclature, Giò Marconi is not only one of the best-known private galleries, but is also a competitive private foundation. Its programme is based on very refined choices and has included impressive historical exhibitions dedicated to artists of institutional renown. Many shows have also covered the creative scene in a general sense, offering an immediate and certain success to the artists presented.

Massimo De Carlo
www.massimodecarlo.it
Via Ventura 5 - Tel 02.70003987
Mon-Sat 11:00-19:30
Metro Lambrate FS/Green Line (10 min. walk)

The gallery was transferred to via Ventura: De Carlo came first and the others followed! It was however not the first move: after starting in via Bocconi, it was based for a long time in viale Corsica. In any case it has always been one of Milan’s most meaningful galleries and enjoys fame reaching beyond Italy. It shows artists of several generations and different origins who are nevertheless always internationally known.

Lia Rumma
Via Solferino 44 - Tel 02.29000101
Tue-Sat 11:00-13:00 / 15:00-19:00
Metro Moscova/Green Line

This gallery has premises in Naples and in the centre of Milan, although the latter is about to move soon to a
different area, away from present general trends. It is being transferred not to the via Ventura district but to a place that some are expecting - if promises are maintained - will become an alternative area for contemporary arts: via Procaccino, near to the Fabbrica del Vapore. The gallery is known to art critics for its epoch-making choices and for its promotional activities.

Emi Fontana
Viale Bligny 42 - Tel 02.58322237
Tue-Sat 10:00-13:00 / 16:00-20:00
Metro Porta Genova FS/Green Line + Tram 9

In all probability this is the most refined location in Milan, known for its exhibitions and for their consistency. Fontana does not follow trends but creates them. This gallery is not located in an area where the system of contemporary arts operates; it is in an old palace which is perhaps not very welcoming to the unwitting newcomer, but certainly bizarre and original. These historical premise have recently been complemented by a second gallery, located not in Italy but in Los Angeles and called Emi Fontana, West of Rome.

Studio Guenzani
via Eustachi 10 - Tel 02.29409251
Tue-Sat 15:00-19:30 (and by appointment)
Metro Lima/Red Line

Guenzani raises the stakes and gives a clear sign of strong dynamism. No change or renewal of the historic gallery in via Eustachi, but instead a new project room in via Melzo for presenting ad hoc projects like its most recent acquisitions including Marcella Vanzo, as well as better known artists like Patrick Tuttofuoco, Giuseppe Gabellone, Luisa Lambri and Margherita Manzelli.

Francesca Kaufmann
Via dell’Orso 16 - Tel 02.72094331
Tue-Fri 11:00-19:30 Sat 14:00-19:30
Metro Cairoli/Red Line

The gallery seems like a project room, difficult to manage for group shows although hospitable and flexible, and capable of housing installations of the site-specific kind for the single artist. The artistic line adopted by Francesca Kaufmann is also distinguished by its orientation towards female art works which are delicate while having a strong impact. One significant exception is the Albanian artist Adrian Paci.

Raffaella Cortese
Via Stradella 7 - Tel 02.2043555
Tue-Sat 15:00-19:30 (and by appointment)
Metro Lima/Red Line

A permanent gallery, forward looking and of undoubted quality. Raffaella Cortese exhibits both young and not so young, Italian and foreign artists: their level of quality is always good at her shows which alternate retrospective exhibitions with recent projects or unknown artists working specially for a show at her gallery. The gallery itself is a long and narrow basement which was inaugurated with a performance by Marcello Maloberti.

Prometeo
Via Ventura 3 - Tel 348.7394163
Mon-Sat 10:00-13:00 / 15:30-19:30
Metro Lambrate FS/Green Line (10 min. walk)

Upon moving from Lucca to Milan, Prometeo kept its original location while intending to extend its range of artists by making use of the district which currently seems destined to become the Milanese version of Chelsea: via Ventura and surroundings. The artistic choices of Ida Pisani show a clear taste for foreign art and show a particular preference for South-American works. However a new interest seems to be guiding her eastwards and towards Russia.

Different approaches to the social and underground scene in Milan
Occupation and self-management: these were the weapons in the 1970s that generated the first attempts to meet the rising need for social contacts and for an oasis of counter-culture and suitable locations for alternative meeting places. In Milan and elsewhere, we witnessed the creation of the first “Centri sociali” - on the initiative of young militant socialists. Old homesteads, former factories and abandoned buildings were occupied by groups of young people and then converted into multi-functional centres which included bookshops, concert halls and bars open to everybody and operating on a non-profit basis. The inevitable conflict with official institutions had various consequences depending on the circumstances:  some of them were simply destroyed by bulldozers, while for others a solution was found enabling them to operate within the law: some continued to just survive under the threat of clearance, while everyone involved did their utmost to meet the tastes of an increasingly broad-based public.
Nowadays these social centres are closely linked with the clubs sponsored by Arci, an “association for the promotion of socialism” set up in 1957, founded on democratic and antifascist ideals. In Milan city and province there are more than 160. Many of the centres set up in recent years serve to animate some lifeless suburban areas and are authentic night spots, frequented mainly by young people and their varied programmes range from live music to theatre and dj sets. Once again the idea is to offer a panorama of left-wing alternative culture. Milan seems to want just this.

Centri sociali (Social Centres)
Cantiere
www.cantiere.org
Via Monte Rosa 84 - Tel 02.36511380
Metro Lotto/Yellow Line

Bookshop full of works by ‘alternative way’ publishers, tavern for aperitif and ethnic meals, also musical evenings for ‘no global’ spirits. The Cantiere Centro sociale is located in the former Fiera zone, in a building that was occupied in May 2001, once housing the old Derby, a former site in the old city hosting cabaret premises. Offering debates and presentations of new books, and a radio studio, where you can also navigate the Internet with wi-fi net and enjoy the football matches on giant screens.

Cox 18
www.cox18.org
Via Conchetta 18 - Tel 02.89400302
Metro Romolo /Green Line

In the Ticinese district, a front wall with graffiti, a tiny entrance door, a courtyard surrounded by old flats of the ‘ringhiera’ kind, a bar, a stage for concerts (mainly punk/rock), a room for exhibitions. All this is Cox 18. And more,
since 1971 this has also been the site of the historic Calusca bookshop, where you can find books and journals on leftist political movements, youth and underground movements. And on the last Sunday of each month, there is a local market for organic products.

Leoncavallo
www.leoncavallo.org
Via Watteau 7 - Tel 02.6705185
Bus 43-81

The Leoncavallo represents a phase in the history of Milan just like the Duomo and the Pirelli skyscraper. It started in 1975 in via Leoncavallo and after the clearance in 1994, it transferred to a district named Greco. Not without some argument, however, meaning the threat of bulldozers still exists. However, the ‘leoncavallini’ are still going strong: in the big central hall which is used for the main concert and electronic evenings, in the Baretto where every Thursday jazz music sessions are held, or in the bookshop, the courtyard and the popular canteen. Just one change: in 2001 the social centre was renamed ‘Spazio pubblico Autogestito’ (self-managed public area). Its motto is now “Here we are, and we’re going to remain here!”.

Pergola
Via A.della Pergola 5 Tel - 02 69010129
Metro Porta Garibaldi FS/Green Line

In an area being reconverted (where Città della Moda is to be built) this multifunctional centre offers a cafeteria, restaurant, Internet free of charge and hostel accommodation for 10 euro per night. The management is enterprising: every year there are new projects, recently including a rehearsal room and video room with multimedia archive. At weekends the Bomboclaat Club is host to hip hop, reggae music and drum’n’bass concerts: from midnight to dawn.

Torchiera
www.ecn.org/torchiera
Piazzale Cimitero Maggiore 18

Originally a homestead built in the XIV century near today’s main city cemetery, sold by the monks of Certosa di Garegnano in 1888 to the City of Milan. During 1991-1992 a local group of young people created the present Centro sociale, although nowadays its activities continue amidst a rather uncertain relationship with the authorities. Meanwhile the ‘Banda degli Ottoni a Scoppio’ carry on playing at their weekly concert with a good sound system, aperitif drinks and events of cultural interest. And every winter on 25th December there is a performance of the unique so-called ‘anticlerical Christmas’.

Vittoria
www.ecn.org/vittoria
Via Muratori 32 - Tel 02.5453986
Metro Lodi/Yellow Line

Left-wing political commitment, punk rock concerts and film shows with a progressive background are the highlights at this Centro sociale which is near corso Lodi. The premises are rather spartan: a big saloon which is easily converted into a concert hall, dancing floor, cinema, and a bar conducive to never ending conversations. There is also a courtyard, which can be used.
ARCI Social Clubs
Bellezza
www.arcibellezza.it
Via Bellezza 16a - tel 02.58302674
Metro Crocetta/Yellow Line + Tram 24

Dancing courses ranging from tango to ballroom style, and some theatre activity: Arci Bellezza is well known for its inexpensive dancing school. But it is also an ideal place for anybody looking for an evening of fun without over-spending. Located since 1976 in the premises of a 1920-30s Casa del Popolo, it offers a considerable variety of reasonably-priced mid-day and evening meals. The Bellezza is rather noisy during the winter months: better to go there in the summer when its restaurant and dance floor are in the open air. Membership card required, Euro 13.

Cicco Simonetta
www.ciccosimonetta.org
Via Cicco Simonetta 16 - Tel 02 3473845274

This is how one might describe Cicco Simonetta a small bohemian place in the Ticinese district. Offering concerts of 'acoustic’ music, cabaret events, aperitif drinks plus jazz and much more. People do return here regularly after trying it out. Membership card required, 12 euro.

Circolo Magnolia
www.circolomagnolia.it
Circonvallazione Idroscalo 41, Segrate - Tel 02.3338534814

In fine weather Circolo Magnolia offers concerts, festivals and dj sets under the stars. Its bar, stand and console transfer to the park and lots of Milanese come to see what’s on. But the young people running it are keen to meet the demands of reggae-enthusiasts, maniacs of indie rock, punk music etc. Therefore even in winter they play on the banks of the Idroscalo (the artificial lake next to Linate airport) and it is good: you can hear nice music and at reduced prices, people drink and dance, and there is also Balilla football sometimes. It even has a smoking area. Anything else? Membership card required, 10 euro.

La Casa 139
www.lacasa139.com
Via Ripamonti 139 - Tel 02.45488267

The apartment premises are on two floors. Use the intercom. After closing the heavy door behind them, visitors find themselves in a vintage style room, among people chatting away on small sofas, some drinking, others looking at photos and pictures on the walls, some playing Balilla football. Most people, however, head upstairs for the weekly concert. Here, music is master and it’s always good quality music. Membership card required, 15 euro.

Weekly programmes that are rich and varied in taste, ranging from cabaret evenings to sessions for improvised theatre, concerts and readings by dj sets. On the Naviglio Grande, in a district which is relatively unknown. Early in 2007 there was a change of management but the atmosphere is as it was - absolutely intimate and informal. The name is Greek and S’Agapò means “I love you”. Membership card required, 10 euro.

Scighera
www.lascighera.org
Via Candiani 131 - Tel  02.44417226

Since 2006 Scighera, meaning “fog” in Milanese dialect, is the name of a club in the Bovisa area. Almost 500 square metres including the bar, computers for Internet and the stage itself. With regard to music, they prefer jazz/blues, folk styles and singer-songwriters. Theatre of the social kind, poetry contests and film documentaries do the rest. But what really matters is the atmosphere: warm and accommodating. Perfect for reading a journal, playing chess, eating a roll or simply enjoying a glass of wine in peace. Just like in an old-style pub. Membership card required, 12 euro.

Theaters
Independent theatres in Milan
In Milan there are over 20 theatres, large and small, each one with its own history and different characteristics. Moreover the many “independent theatres”, meaning the “non institutionalised theatres”, plus underground establishments, differ a lot from one another, although for young theatregoers here the space available for them seems never to be adequate. While creativity is not lacking, not all theatre managers are prepared to support their as yet unknown energies.
Although it has become an institution, one simply has to mention the Piccolo Teatro, the historic place created by Giorgio Strehler & Paolo Grassi, which is possibly the theatre best known, most important and international theatre in Italy. Today it has three quite different halls, capable of hosting a considerable variety of programmes. Above all, the hall of Piccolo Teatro Studio, featuring a layout reminiscent of the theatre Les Bouffes du Nord in Paris, is suited to real three-dimensionality of space and is much loved by Peter Brook who often stages his plays here. In its three halls we can admire theatre productions of a very high level internationally, with works produced by Peter Brook, Robert Wilson, Robert Lepage, Eimuntas Necrosius and others.
Another location that is equally important in experimental theatre is the CRT (Theatre Research Centre) which has hosted all the top personalities in avantgarde theatre over the last 30 years. It was also the first to bring Kantor to the western world.
Then there are other theatres with halls of a particular kind, like the Teatro Arsenale which is located in a deconsecrated church, or the Teatro Libero, situated on the third floor of a normal residential building, or the PIM Spazio Scenico, an ex industrial warehouse, but which has surprisingly good acoustics .
Enjoy your play!

The Piccolo Teatro and CRT arose as theatres of experimentation but having partly overcome this function are nowadays dedicated mainly to performing the great works of contemporary theatre.

Founded in 1947 by Paolo Grassi and Giorgio Strehler, Milan’s Piccolo Teatro was the first example of repertory theatre being set up in Italy. Its productions under the direction of Strehler included numerous memorable works, such as L’Opera da tre soldi by Brecht, Il Giardino dei ciliegi by Cechov, La Tempesta by Shakespeare, Arlecchino servitore di due padroni by Goldoni.
Nowadays the Piccolo Teatro di Milano has three stages, the historical one in via Rovello, known as Teatro Grassi, the experimental location Teatro Studio, inaugurated in 1987, and the New Theatre, which is the Teatro Strehler. For Milan’s theatre-going public, these three stages are institutions hosting the very best international events.
