The museum was designed by architect Renzo Piano. Around 180 works of the Classic Modernism document 20th century art through the personal approach of Hildy and Ernst Beyeler. The couple’s choice sets out to show visitors important aspects of this period’s paintings represented by Monet, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Picasso, Warhol, Lichtenstein or Bacon. Works by the Classic Modernists are presented along with some 25 objects of tribal art from Africa, Oceania and Alaska.

The Schaulager in Münchenstein is home to the contemporary works of the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation’s collection which are not on display elsewhere.The architects Herzog & de Meuron have created an extraordinary space for the Schaulager. Their remit was to create a warehouse which would be used for the public storage of contemporary art under optimum climatic conditions, and which could be opened to the public on particular occasions. Schaulager is first and foremost a response to the old and new needs for the storage of works representing the visual arts.
